The project brief tasked us with creating a dynamic new retail and leisure hub at the heart of Retail World, Gateshead. Leveraging our expertise as industry specialists, we designed a scheme that not only delivered the required floorspace but also minimised the disruption to the existing car park during construction.

Our scope of work included the design and delivery of two innovative pods, which house a total of five units. These pods are situated within an attractive new public realm featuring seating areas and planters, which contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, we implemented strategic servicing arrangements and reconfigured the car park to ensure optimal traffic flow.

Architecturally, the development draws inspiration from the industrial context of the surrounding area. This is reflected in the use of new cor-ten faced composite cladding, which harmonizes with the established aesthetic of the retail park. The aluminium-framed glazed shopfronts enhance the visual appeal of the units facing the new pedestrian footpath that seamlessly connects to the existing retail park.

A standout feature of the development is the glazed projecting canopy that extends slightly from all the units along the pedestrian link. This canopy provides an elegant, cohesive finish to the units and offers partial shelter to pedestrians and those using the outdoor seating areas.

Completed in 2019, this development not only complements its industrial surroundings but also integrates modern design elements to create a functional and visually appealing retail and leisure destination.
